Placenta Encapsulation Service

  • Julie McBurney and Andrea Denali

Placenta Bliss is Julie McBurney and Andrea Denali, plus Samantha Dunn. our backup specialist. We are independent encapsulation specialists working together to provide a complete service for our clients. We have been serving the lovely families of the Triangle community for over 13 years, and we have 750 placentas and counting!

We are trained and certified through IPPA, International Placenta & Postpartum Association.  As IPPA Specialists, we are considered Personal Chefs. We are trained in food protection and food-safe sanitizing and have completed the NC Food Safety and Handling Course. We have also completed a Biologix Bloodborne Pathogen Course. We adhere to strict, universal handling and sanitizing procedures to prevent the transmission of blood-borne pathogens and other common infections while providing placenta encapsulation services. This fulfills the federal workplace safety requirements of OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030.

We dehydrate to the temperatures recommended for jerky by the FDA for both raw and cooked (steamed) meat. Although ongoing research supports the benefits of placenta encapsulation, these benefits have not yet been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

We chose this training because the types of placenta preparation were unlimited. It was important to us to be trained in both a traditional heated method and a basic preparation method. As we do in our birth work, we want to offer our clients options for the most beneficial placenta preparation.

  • We want you to enjoy seamless service; one you can trust to be safe and profession.

We enjoy getting to know our clients and their vision for postpartum. We require a prenatal meeting with our clients to get to know their postpartum goals and to ensure they understand their role in the safety of our placenta services.   We want our clients to have proper placenta-handling education before their birth.  Our time together allows us to review safe placenta handling, records of your blood work, timeline of events, and our liability form.  This also gives us time to answer questions and share any resources of other services in the community surrounding labor, birth, and postpartum if needed.

We know well from our years of Birth Doula work that you cannot plan birth, and due dates are an estimation. To provide the safest service possible, we are on-call for you and offer pickups 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure properly controlled handling.  We know the importance of keeping your placenta viable for encapsulation.

We work hard to pick up the placenta within 2 hours of your birth and verify that the placenta was placed in a food-safe container.  Zip-lock bags are made of food-safe material meant for food from creation to your hands.  The hospital does not provide food-safe containers.

Our years of experience with 750+ encapsulations & happy clients

Our Encapsulation Offerings:

Basic

Your Investment is $250, which includes attending a prenatal meet and greet, pickup of placenta, delivery of capsules, and having a postpartum conversation about your capsules.

The Basic method of preparation skips the heating process altogether by not steaming the placenta. It is believed that not steaming the placenta preserves more of the essential nutrients and does not degrade the hormone and nutritional value. Using this option provides a burst of energy upfront and a great hormone boost. It is very energizing, which might be exactly what your postpartum concern, so it meets your needs well, and some find it leaves them feeling more anxious. This method tends to yield more than the Traditional method as it is not steamed first before encapsulation. Depending on capsule size 0 or 00 and the size of the placenta, the yield is generally from 90 to 190. The Basic method is dehydrated at the highest temperature, 160°, for 4 hours before being dropped down to 120° for 20 hours.

Traditional

Your Investment is $270, which includes attending a prenatal meet-and-greet, pickup of placenta, delivery of capsules, and having a postpartum conversation about your capsules.

The Traditional method of preparation involves gently heating the placenta first with steam and optional fresh organic ginger in the water, then dehydrating the placenta before it is put into capsules. Using this preparation is thought to bring out the placenta's healing and longer-lasting tonifying properties. This method is thought to be best when working with a history of depression or postpartum depression. This method tends to yield fewer capsules than the Basic method as it is steamed first before encapsulation. Depending on capsule size 0 or 00 and the size of the placenta, yield is generally from 70 -150. This method is heated at the highest temperature, 160°, for two hours before being dropped down to 125° for 22 hours.

Both

Your Investment is $300, which includes attending a prenatal meet and greet, placenta pickup, delivery capsules, and having a postpartum conversation about your capsules.

Many of our clients enjoy having both types of encapsulation, so we do half Traditional and half Basic. They enjoy using the Traditional when they first start taking their capsules to have that more consistent hormone stabilization and the Basic for the more energetic properties when they are ready to start adding more into their day. A wonderful option brought to you by the amazing women we have served the last few years. We call this “Both” because it is not a true half and half as everything is heated at the highest temperature, 160°, for 4 hours before being dropped down to 120° for 20 hours. Depending on capsule size 0 or 00 and the size of the placenta, the yield is generally from 70 -180.

The next step for getting set up to work with Placenta Bliss:

1st Step

Fill out this contact form. Check our availability for your estimated due date. Find out if you are in our travel range for delivery to your home. Ask any questions you have about the process, the type of encapsulation, or any detail you're unclear on. Also, receive our Placenta Bliss client paperwork package to get started with our service.

2nd Step

Get your paperwork in order. Fill out pages 3-5 of the Placenta Bliss client paperwork package: the contract, a client copy of the contract, and the client information page. Pull together a copy of your blood. You can request a copy from your provider or print the results from your patient portal. The blood work is the basic OB panel w/HIV, we will just review your HIV and STD status. We are looking at the infectious diseases status and do not need to keep it on file. We do this for the protection of our families and the ones we work with.

3rd Step

Set up an in-person prenatal meeting. We want to get to know our clients and understand their placenta service and postpartum goals. We also take this time to go over placenta handling so you know what to do from the time of birth to pick up. We get all the paperwork in order, including reviewing your blood work, before reading and signing the Client & Specialist Liability form. Pages 3-5 from your Placenta Bliss client paperwork package and A non-refundable deposit of $50 reduced from the placenta encapsulation fee (remainder due upon delivery).

What's next after the prenatal meeting?

First, you will inform us you are in labor. Once we have been informed that active labor has begun, we will take this time to get everything in order. This is an important step to creating a seamless pickup. We decide which of our specialists will be working with you. We take this time to review pick up and contact information. So, whomever you deem responsible for informing us that you're in active labor will need to text/call and be sure to get a response from us. We will need to know who is in labor and where they will be birthing to look up the client's information.

Then you will call once the placenta is born. We are on call 24/7! Please Do Not Wait To Call Us! Once the placenta is born, it is examined by your provider, and cord blood donation has been taken (if planning to donate). Have the placenta placed into your gallon-size Ziploc bag with your name & phone number on it, then placed in your cooler with ice, and call us. We would prefer to get to you within the 2 hours of immediate postpartum to ensure a safe and quality encapsulation. To do that, we need to pick up your placenta promptly. We want to ensure it stays viable for encapsulation, so please do not leave your placenta on ice for many hours, and always keep in mind our travel time to and from. We will not be able to encapsulate it if it is not properly handled. With all that in mind, Please Do Not Leave A Message via Text, Email, Facebook Messenger, Google Hangouts, etc. We must receive a phone call stating Who Birthed And Where.

Lastly, you will set up delivery. Please inform us of your departure from the hospital so we can set up the delivery of your placenta service. We are typically done with 48 hours and ready to deliver, although due to timing on your part or ours, it may be up to 72 hours before your capsules are delivered. For example, you may not be released from the hospital until day 3 after a cesarean birth. Or we may need to deliver capsules to another client before starting your encapsulation, as we work within a fool-proof system of only actively working on one encapsulation from preparation to delivering the finished capsules.

What happens at delivery?

  • We will deliver your bag with all the goodies you ordered to your doorstep if you are within our travel range.

  • We email you information on your product so you can always find it and review it from any of your electronics. If you would prefer a printout, please inform us at the prenatal meeting.

  • We go over the information to help you decide where to start.

  • We talk over all important care factors for you and your product(s).

This can be done in person, over the phone, or via text/email. You’ll need to inform us of your preference for communications about your capsules at the prenatal meeting.
